Who am I?
Let me introduce myself
I'm Barnaby, a consultant, careers coach and writer, experienced in supporting and engaging diverse groups of clients ranging from students (undergraduate to executive level) to accomplished professionals worldwide. Over the years, I’ve used an imaginative, effective and engaging approach to work with individuals and groups looking to plan their career journeys and professional futures.
Having worked at three world-renowned universities in the UK - Imperial College London, University College London (UCL), and the London School of Economics (LSE) - as well as in further and adult education and as a freelance coach, I've worked with thousands of people across one-to-one sessions, group workshops, and lecture formats. I’ve spent time advocating the value of career mentoring, researched principles of AI and career guidance, and for a while was a sepcndary school governor. That work has taken me well beyond London to present: to China, the heart of the EU in Brussels, Sweden (with the PowerPoint accompanied by excellent cinnamon rolls), and Australia - where I now live in Melbourne, occasionally staring due south in the direction of Antarctica.
When it comes to writing, whether it’s a blog or a book, it’s something I find is a good way to make sense of things, often creatively, from my experiences and my professional lens. This led me to writing local theatre reviews for a few years, as well as dipping my toe into the slightly less whimsical more strictly academic writing of case studes and research. My blog and writing here is somewhere in the middle of that venn diagram, as is a book I wrote, Read the Room: How to Empathize at Work.
Aside, I enjoy a bit of running here and there, playing the guitar badly, and drinking tea from a collection of far too many different blends to be practical. I keep this up alongside a love of coffee, with this two-tone approach to hot beverages mirroring my London-Melbourne-blended existence.
